Runs, then dies
My new, to me, 2166 (600 hours) runs for 15 minutes at mid throttle, then dies.
It will start again within about 5 minutes, then runs for about 5 minutes. It will keep up this pattern indefinitely. I've noticed that the initial run of 15 minutes has lengthened (from about 10 minutes to 15 minutes) as the temperature outside has gotten colder, which makes me think it may be a coil. The gas is new. I've blown out the fuel line in both directions. I've cleaned the carb bowl, replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and spark plug. I've loosened the gas cap. I'm thinking that since the pattern is so consistent that it's electrical rather than fuel-related. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you! |

There is a possibility that you Magneto "coil" is failing. I have had them do similar things like what yours does, However generally all of mine took a lot longer than 5 min to come back to life.
Is there a low oil shut down switch on that engine?

Welcome to OCC.......
Sounds like it could be a Fuel Delivery issue.

Could be a float or Fuel Pump issue.

Easy enough to check... When it dies crack it open and see if fuel comes out..
Hopefully the OP sees this before spending money

I'm guessing it's electrical, too. The pattern seems too consistent for it to be fuel. I've replaced the fuel pump and I've been through a few tanks of gas. Is the Magneto "coil" the SAM? Can I test it with a multimeter before I remove it?
Thanks! |

IF.........everything is original, then the 2166 rolled out of the Factory with a Kohler CH16S-45509. If you like, I can send you the CH Service Manual.

When it won't restart.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
