If you are not already learned in electronics, you should familiarize yourself with what diodes are, how they work, and most of all how to install them correctly.
They are current directional control devices. Put them in wrong and if they were not your problem to begin with, you will then have an additional one.

Tractordata says the 3165 came with a 2 cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine. Looking at the 3165 wiring diagram I do not see any diodes like are on the fuel solenoid of the 2 cylinder Kohler Commands. Diodes in the circuit are steering diodes that do not allow the 12 volts from the system to feed the wrong way when you have two control lines tied together on one circuit function as in energizing a fuel solenoid.

I don't know why they don't show the ignition diodes in any of the schematics.

The part# is 844547.

Here was another owner having the same issue.

Yeah, if there are diodes in the ignition circuit and you had an issue there it would throw you for a loop trying to troubleshoot using a wiring diagram that doesn't show them.

There are 2 diodes that isolate the ignition coils. When 1 or both of them fail it will do all kind of strange things with the spark. I had 1 fail on my 3165 and replaced them with these. The Radio Shack part number is 276-1114. These are rated at 1.5 amps/1000 volt and cost around $3.
Attachment 108968

Another problem that could exist is your ignition coils could be failing and they are located behind the flywheel if they need replaced.
Attachment 108969

I would also check your ignition switch to see if it is failing. My 3165 did that a few years ago and it was acting up like yours. Unplug it and see if the plug is corroded or has any heat damage on any of the terminals.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.
Couple of questions, are these diodes only on the Briggs engine? And are these diodes in the engine harness?

The diodes are behind the fan shroud. Each coil has its own diode and then they connect together and only one wire exits the shroud.

I'm not 100% sure but I think only the Briggs engines have them.

All of the diff lock Kohler Command 3000 series have diodes on the two control lines for the anti backfire solenoid on the carb. The diodes are in the wiring harness behind the flywheel shroud covered by a plastic tube.

Thanks you guys. I have a 2165 with the Briggs 16 hp and a 3240 with the diff lock. Those particular models are not listed on the wiring diagram list that I could see. I will make a mental note and hopefully I will remember if I have issues.

Do remember diodes are a "check valve" so to speak, inasmuch as they allow current to only flow one way.

Both the 2165 and 3240 have wiring diagrams listed in the link I provided.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
