Can you reuse a block that has a chip out of the cylinder wall?
Just wondering...not for myself...but just sold my old K-301 block to a guy in Utah who recently picked up a 124 that has an engine with a broken rod. Based on what he tells me, when the rod broke it chipped out the cylinder skirt on the bottom, and guys are telling him it's ok to reuse (?) He's leery of it, hence the reason he bought mine (which also had a broken rod). In looking closely never saw any visible damage to mine and so always figured someone could reuse / rebuild it. At least the guy who built an engine for me thought so after looking it over (but then he didn't need it cause he came across a block that had never been used).

That depends, on how big the chip is.

Regardless of how big the chipped area is, wouldn't there be a loss of compression? Shouldn't something like that be sleeved?

Location and size of the chip, are very important to determine the usefulness.

They usually are only 1/2" or so above the bottom of the spigot. FWIW, various blocks are relieved in the skirt area for counterweight/rod clearance from the factory. |

No change in compression with a chip at the bottom of the cylinder. Most I have seen is at the very bottom of the cylinder and the Piston is still 98% surrounded and supported by the cylinder bore. As long as the cylinder isn't cracked up into the ring travel area it should be ok but I can't see your block from here so idk if it's salvageable or not.
That said the last k321 that I overhauled had previously blown up/broke the rod and it is completely fine. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
