1220 PTO Shuts Off
I know this issue has shown up everywhere but I've also tried everything on all of them. Here is my issue:
I bought a 1220 Hydro from some guy when I bought my house. Great and flawless for over a year. Recently the PTO stopped working when it got hot. I checked air gap - fine. I checked wiring the best I know how. Thought the switch was bad so put a different one on to test and same result. Replaced the PTO clutch. All new. Same result. Heard about a wire or 2 under the seat and behind the back right tire that seems to be cut often because of bad design. No issues. Checked the new PTO air gap and made it .25. When I THOUGHT I finally had it solved and the switched worked perfectly, strong, the whole engine stops. Just turns off. This takes about 15-20 seconds but only AFTER running for PTO which turns off about 5 seconds before the whole mower. I'm completely lost now. Maybe the switch is pulling too much power and actually is bad. I really don't know any other issue it could be. Everything was fine until the PTO stopped when it got hot. |

First I'd make the air gap correct .25, is way too much.
I'm surprised it works at all being a quarter of an inch! Adjust to .010 then I'd address the battery to see if it is charging and putting out 12- 14V to the system. |

Air gap is actually .010. i'm not sure why I said .25? hmm..
But I got it to work! battery was charged and ready (less than a year old). But because the last owners had basically wired everything to the key, all the wiring was connected with wire screws. I unscrewed ALL of them, soldered them, heat shrink wrap and electrical tape for last resort. Flawless. Must of had a loose wire connection somewhere on this frankenstein machine. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
