1A tiller replacement pulley
I have a 1A tiller, although I suspect all use the same pulley, which unfortunately at some point in it’s life it was run up against the belt guard. It is worn pretty bad and is wearing and throwing the belt. I have found old threads that suggest measuring the pulley and checking places like McMaster Carr, etc. which I have done. The problem I am seeing is the factory belt is a 13/32” x 53”, or commonly replaced by a 3v530 or 3vx530 but I can’t find a pulley in the proper size to match the belt. I can only find pulleys in a 4L or A designation in the proper size, which by my measurements is a 10” OD, 3/4” shaft, with a 3/16 key taking the 13/32” or 3V belt.
I can’t believe I am the first person looking for a replacement but who knows... somebody has to be first. So anybody have a suggestion? Can I use a pulley marked for a 4L or A belt? My research so far says no based on belt manufacture recommendations since the belt would bottom out in the pulley. Can a 4L or A belt pulley be fitted to the output shaft of the gearbox? Thanks for any help. The tiller is the primary reason for me having cub cadets and I would hate to give up on them over a pulley! |

I haven't worked on my tiller in a long time, but what is preventing you from changing the pulleys and belt for a 1/2" wide drive. The wider belt can't hurt a thing and have longer life.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
