Default Free Craftsman

I got it from one of my dad’s friends. It’s pretty beat up, but runs good. I’m going to fix it up and sell it.

Those aren't bad mowers. Got family with a smaller one that does a great job. It uses just a touch of oil. Other than maintenance including a couple belts, the only repair I had to do to it is putting new brakes on the mower deck--crazy design, you think the deck is not running but the loose belt still makes it spin if the brakes are bad.

My friend has had a few come in the shop with a bent or broken drive pulley on the trans. They have a repair kit for that, $ and time. I watched that video the other day of a hydro-gear i think, where the shifter moves but the trans does not change. With just a little wear on the shift fork it slides over top of the gear it's supposed to move. Mike

Hey it's free and it's red, what is not to like about that?
When it is sold and profit is in hand, remember the kind gentleman that gave it to you with a small token of appreciation.

It does seem like a decent machine, but it’s not a Cub. He had it since new, and never had any problems. There is something wrong with the deck on it. I think it is because the engine is leaking oil onto the deck pulley and causing the belt to slip. Sometimes the deck spins normally, other times it spins slowly.

Since he wouldn’t take any money, I offered to help him with maintenance on his new tractor.

There are some of the Craftsman mowers that ARE good machines---within the realm of cheap mowers. There were some very cheap Cadets and Deere's built within the last 15 years. So far every part I have needed was in stock at a local independent mower shop.

It finally found a new home today. It went to another friend of my dad’s whose son just bought a house. I cleaned it up, changed the oil, replaced the throttle cable, and put a tube in one rear tire. I was also planning on painting the deck, changing the belts, and fixing some oil leaks, but he wanted it as is. Although it’s not a Cub, I will say it’s not a bad tractor. I’ve been mowing with it the past few weeks, it mows really nice and seems fairly well built.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
