Default Coil is hot

Having an issue with the KT17 in my 782. I replaced my battery and when I connected the cable there was a small spark indicating something is drawing some power. Amp gauge also shows a discharge. But about 30 minutes later I placed my hand on the coil and found it to be hot.

So I am hoping someone has seen something like this and give me a direction to go.

Well
Nobody ...
So I went to the troubleshooting and service info area and found the manuals you all posted here. Thank you. A terrific source for answers.
I tested the coil and directed and the primary winding checked to spec but the secondary checked "open". As did the plug wires. I don't understand why that would be.
Condenser also checked out.
Points are clean.
I checked compression and had 90 psi on both cylinders. Not sure if this is a good number but it doesn't seem too low or uneven. I can check later after some run time to see if there is any change.
So after a lot of starter fluid and cranking we are now up and running. I've adjusted the main and idle screws to my satisfaction.

So after all that I did notice something while trying to get started. I had a tendency to leave the key in the run position after a failed cranking. So I'm leaning toward the "hot coil" issue to me leaving the key on.

Any seconds to that?

I second that motion, don't leave the key in the run position, as the points, when closed will heat up the coil and ruin it....

#90 compression is just fine,
These double breasted opposed twins are low compression engines.
Iffin yall in-sits on leaving the key on, ya gonna pony up a Benjamin and a jackson or two, for something new.
