What type of solder and flux did you use? You'll need an acid flux or acid core solder. In my experience, the issue with failed solder joints is not getting the parts hot enough for the solder to flow. Also, if the crack is more than a hairline, the solder won't flow into it via capillary action, so if it's an open crack, you'll likely have trouble getting it to seal. Replace tank in that case.
I'll offer another approach. Buy a can of Red Kote from the auto parts store (I found it at O'Reilly's) and coat the interior of the tank with it. I used it on a 72 tank that was riddled with pin hole leaks. Worked great and is still holding up 4 years later. It should seal a fine crack, especially if you put a piece of tape on the outside.

Got the tank soldered today. Sealed good. Adjusted the new carb, then ran the tiller for a couple of hours. Did great!

This is where I got the carb: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
