Cub Cadet 71 tractor mower deck?
Hi,
I inherited a beautiful IH Cub Cadet 71. From what I can tell it must have been built between 65 and 67. I have a question. I do not have a mower deck for it, but would like to have one. Do I have to buy a deck that is as old as the tractor? Or are mower decks interchangeable? Can I buy a new one that will run on then 71? I really appreciate any help. We've had the tractor in storage for a a few years and we are just moving onto some property and Im looking forward to getting it out on our property! thank you in advance. Hayes |

As long as it fits you can use it. I wouldn't get one that's too large as a 7HP- assuming your 71 still has the stock 7HP motor- isn't really made for anything larger than a 38" mower. You'll have more luck finding a period correct one to fit, but again anything will fit as long as you have mechanical inclination.

No but to make it easy for yourself, and an easy fit you'll want a 38" deck as mention because of the 7HP engine. I picked up this one off a restored model 72 to put on my Model 70. Sorry this is the only pic I have of it is the tag, the deck is a my storage place. But this number is what you'd be looking for. I see these deck often on craigslist. Sometimes it's cheaper to find a good deck on a tractor and buy the whole shebang. HTH The guy I bought mine off of gave me a pretty good deal on the deck and a narrow frame K301 for $240.00

Do you have the mule drive? You will need one to mount the deck and loop the PTO driven belt.

Mower deck
Gentlmen,
Thank you for the responses. Billy O So to be clear, I can't necessarily add a mower deck to my tractor? I have to add this mule Drive? If so, where do I get one of those? drglinski: You say "as long as it fits" I won't know that it fits until after I buy it. So I need to know which one to buy. Is this a correct synopsis? : Any 38 inch deck will fit. I will need to add a mule drive? Im sorry guys. I am clueless on this tractor and I need a little more clarity. Where is the best place to buy the deck that I need, where I will be able to find it quickly? (Craigslist could be a while before I see what I need) thank you |

These are old machines that need to have old parts matched up with them. There is more then likely no " quickly" about it. You are not going to be able to go to a store and buy what you need. Yes, you have to buy the mule drive. It will hold your mower deck and have the pulleys for your drive belt for the mower. You can go to the Cub Cadet Parts lookup, link at the top of the home page. Start cross referencing parts and that will help you figure out what will match up with you tractor. And start shopping used, that is really the only choice you have. Yes there will be a ot of time and work on your part to get where your going. It's the nature of owning and maintaining 50 year old tractors. Some consider that a pain, others of us consider it part of the JOY of owning and using them. Good luck with your search.

Hayes, here is a look at a Mule Drive. Just to give you an idea of what
you are looking for. I would look for one that is complete, meaning one that someone has not robbed parts off of. You will need them all. YouDSCN1493.jpg DSCN1494.jpg DSCN1495.jpg will need one for a Narrow Frame Tractor as Bryan mentioned. I don't know the compatability between the narrow frames but hope this gives you and idea. Ken |

A 71 will have a bolt on mule drive and pin on deck. No Quick Attach.

Mule Drive
I think the tractor might have a mule drive on it. The front of the tractor has 2 pulleys that have a belt looped over them, and then the belt is strapped to the underside of the tractor. It looks like the belt would be intended to drive a mid mount mower deck. I'll send pics later.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
