Right, the driveshaft spins to the fan, and the fan back to trans does not. so, maybe the splines are gone eiter in the hub itself, or the shaft inside the hub, and not the trans? I've got a manual that I'll consult when I get home this evening, as well.

3/16" allen wrench and a 7/16" socket to remove the 4 socket head bolts at the pump end and just the allen wrench to remove the 4 bolts at the engine end. Small snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring on the end of the drive shaft and it all comes apart. BTDT many times.

Got back to it tonight. Indeed the splines are toast on the shaft. Can I still find one of these? Most likely need the hub, or at least the interior, as well.

Suggest removal of the driveshaft and measure the length. Multiple model tractors use the same driveshaft.

Check the sponsors at the top of the home page. I'll bet someone has the parts you need. Hint, there is currently one listed for sale. But, I have no experience purchasing form the vendor.

Got it off last night. It measure 21 1/4”. So looking at info. it looks like it’s 21.3”. I’ll look around at the sponsors this afternoon. I assume I need to find a used one.

You can see It’s pretty rusty. Definitely not greased. That’s my fault. I’ve only ever greased the other end.

Looks like you need a fan also due to the missing blade. Suggest replacing the o-ring and boots for the CV joints

update: Had been waiting for the mailman to show up. I found a good deal on a used driveshaft, with both joints, and rubber boots in good condition. while waiting went over the tractor, and greased and tightened up everything I could find in the manual. First time I'd ever adjusted the two bolts on the front axle, those make a big difference in steering! Put everything together, and mowed a few laps before it rained before work this morning. Running great at the moment!

Only thing is the new fan. When I tighten the bolts down, the rubber boot has enough flex that I can see the plastic on the fan stretching. I don't want to break it, and have washers in there. Do I need a washer on both sides of the fan? I also, don't want to leave the bolts too loose.

I realize I'm resurrecting an old thread here. I haven't been using the 1641, as my daily driver since fall of '19. Last weekend I was out playing around with my 1641, and I'm getting a noise out of the driveshaft again, when I move lever above the halfway point. I'm afraid the splines on the shaft are bad again. The one I put on, in 2019 had good splines. I'm going to pull it, and look at it, when I get a few minutes.

Is there a chance I didn't get something back together, correctly that would cause premature wear?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
