Default 1650 Hydro question

I picked up a 1650 for a few bucks. Not running at the time I got it, so unable to fully check it out. Got it running after replacing the coil, points and condenser. Has a rap in the engine which gets louder the longer it runs, so I am guessing a crank bearing, a worn connecting rod, or maybe even the counter balance gear bearings. I was planning a rebuild anyway, so no big deal. Here is where I have a question. It seems to me that the hydrostatic drive may need either tuned, cleaned or rebuilt. It seems ok up and down the driveway, but in rougher terrain it does not seem to "hold" its speed or "power"at a constant. For instance it slows down under load and I have to push forward on the lever a good bit to get it to "pull" almost like a slipping belt would do. But then kind of surges too much and I have to pull back. Seems like I am constantly fiddling with the lever more than I should have to. Thoughts???

First change the fluid and filter. But that’s probably not the issue, just good practice on an unknown tractor.
Search trunion repair on this site and you will find what is the issue. It’s quite common.
Look it up on the parts link above if you want to see what you are looking for.it’s under the seat and will require removal of the seat pan.

"Fidgeting" with the hydro is normal. It's hydrostatic, not cruise cntrol. But looking at the trunnion is a good thing to do, as is servicing the trans.

Most 1650's didn't have balance gears.
But those 16's are shakers/vibrators so a lot of noise can be other than the engine.
Have you checked the rubber iso mounts? and
oil pan to cradle bolts? alot are missing or stripped.

George is right on. I don't think any 16 had balance gears. I totally missed that part of your post, talking about the engine.

The bearings on the crank are ball bearings, and seldom fail. Rod knock, piston slap and cam end play cause knocks. Usually it's the rod.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
