It shut down like it ran out of gas.

After an hour, it won't start again. There's no way there's trash coming from the tank. I have the sediment bowl working properly and an extra fuel filter in the line just in case. The sediment bowl is clean as ever.

After an hour, it still won't start. It has to be something wrong with the carb needles, right?

UPDATE: Earlier, I also checked the fire from the spark plug and it's firing very well.

It has cooled completely off even a slight rain shower. I went out and it started in full choke but died after about 10 seconds... won't start again.

Maybe the needle is sticking intermittently. If it were mine, not only would I verify good fuel flow to the carb, but I'd remove the carb bowl and make sure good flow is coming into the carb itself. I'm assuming your fuel cap is properly vented and the fuel lines are not deteriorated to the point they are adding trash. You mentioned an extra fuel filter--did you install it with the flow going the correct way, it should be marked. If all this checks out OK I'd look into getting a carb kit ,at least a needle and seat.

The flow is correct according to the arrow. The bowl flows well! The fuel cap vend is not clogged. I even tried to remove the cap to start it.The hose is brand new. The carb kit was installed new this weekend, including a new seat and needle.

Well, if all that is new and working, I'd open the carb up again and see if any crud turned loose and has something plugged up. Take it a step at a time an regardless of the problem, you'll know what the problem isn't! At least all this work you are doing will "improve" the machines readiness and reliability.

Did you put the new hose on after the carb "rebuild"?
If so, it may have a bit of the hose (rubber) in the carb now.

The saga continues.

Came home after work. It started without choke and ran maybe 10 seconds once it finally got going. It took maybe 15 seconds for it to finally cough into it running full throttle. While doing this, it spewed very dark smoke like diesel fuel type smoke. Restarted again once but had to use the choke and ran for another 5 seconds. Now nothing.

I bought another rebuild kit and I'm going to do pull it apart maybe tomorrow evening.

Thanks to those who have offered input.

I don't think it's a fuel issue, but you tell us what you find.
Have a real hard time thinking it's going from over-fueling to no fuel. Hard for that carb to overfuel that much unless gas is running out the air breather..... given your description.

I let it sit for maybe an hour, Started again very easily w/ choke. It ran for 45 seconds, backfired twice and died. I started it again pretty easily w/ choke. Then it ran for about 10 seconds. Won't start again.

What do you think it might be if it's not a fuel issue? Could the terrible smoke that it put out have fouled the plug that bad? I can try another new plug but a plug should last longer than that. I could keep two on a rotation and just keep one on hand that's nice and clean.

I'll try anything. This was going to be my weekly mower.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
