Wink Another rescue- 1986 1210

Another local distressed Cub. The original Magnum 12 starts and runs excellent with no smoke. Missing some parts, and needs TLC. Sheetmetal fits great. Came with a new Carlisle front tire and new battery.

Nice! Looks very solid, and not abused.

My 1st Cub Cadet was a 1979 model 1250. Very reliable machine!

Having an 82 series version of it, would be cool.

It has sat outside in the elements for a long time, so there are some weathering related issues to address. There is no accident damage. Some of the wiring has been messed with so that needs to be addressed.

I changed the engine oil, which was nasty. Used SAE-30 Cub Cadet oil. It purrs like a kitten. I adjusted the choke and throttle cables.

I fixed the lighting circuit and the charging circuit. Bad wiring and dirty connections were the only issues found.

The Magnum 12 is essentially a K301 that does not use a battery powered ignition (i.e. points/condenser/external coil)

The Magnum 12 ignition system uses a magneto, which uses magnetism to create voltage in the coil which is mounted above the flywheel attached to the rear bearing retainer plate. To shut off the spark, the magneto is shorted to ground.

Interesting. Is the M12 balanced differently than the K301? My 1210 used rubber motor mounts to smooth things out a bit. I tried eliminating the rubber mounts on mine when they wore out but that was a mistake.

I believe the rotating assembly is the same. My 1210 also uses a iso mount system, What is unusual is that the 1210 iso mount is a totally different design as compared to my 1989 1050 with the Magnum 10 which is the more modern version of the K241.

The manual deck lift float pin was snapped off. I removed the release button, drilled it out, and tapped it with a 10-24 tap. A NOS pin threaded right back in. I'm waiting for the little black vinyl cap to finish it off.
