Just to clarify, I DID mean to momentarily shut off ALL the air going in the carb and then remove your hand to see if it would suck some gas through the carb. Your hand being a tighter fit than the choke plate.

I had forgotten about that bolt on the M engine. I'll still go with a stopped up carb.

Also, to me, "crank" means the engine turns over. Not start/run.

I have an older four wheeler that did this same thing. It would barely start in the mornings, but would run great the rest of the day. Ended up being the valve lash was too tight. I think the valve seats started to wear and the valves started to sit farther in the seats. I just redid the valve lash and now its back to starting great.

The valve lash closing up could affect the engine just like a major vacuum leak and cause the engine not to draw. The OP could/should feel this with his hand over the carb while it was cranking.

Mike thanks for your help I understood what you meant unfortunately people read through post too fast and their comments wind up looking silly. Your suggestion helped me find the choke was the problem you and Donnelley helped me and were nice and I certainly appreciate your suggestions it works great.

I think the guys on here trying to help someone with a problem are not as silly as the guy spraying ether into an engine that has a choke that isn't working properly

I'm glad you got it sorted out. I could say more but it's just not worth the back lash.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
