Default Alternate muffler

I'm asking this on a couple of forums and hope to get help here also. I wanted to replace the muffler (# 951-3001P) on my Cub series 2000 2166 w/16 h.p. single cylinder Kohler engine but a new one is well over $200.00. I'm asking if anyone here has successfully used any other style/type/brand muffler on their shaft drive series 2000 Cub tractor. Thanks in advance.

I think the issue will be interference with the hood / sheet metal. Without the hood and sheet metal it should be easy the come up with something.

Thanks Ironman, yeah I saw that one but got stopped in the tracks when I saw the attachment bolts wrung off. That is a given when pulling these mufflers when they have been in use for years.

So if I understand you correctly, you are willing to do whatever it may take to make some other "style/type/brand" of muffler work because you don't want to spend 200 bucks. But you do not want to spend 30 bucks on a perfect fit that simply needs some new mounting studs tack welded on. I'm done.

I don't have a welder, would need to find/pay a welder, buy a pop rivet gun & rivets to reassemble the heat shield then maybe would have $75.00- $80.00 in a used muffler that's probably in the same shape as the one I already have. Thanks for responding anyway & have a gr8 day.

You can drill through where the studs have twisted off and tap it for a 1/4" or 5/16" bolt. Easy fix. I've done a couple that way.

Thanks Sam Mac, that's a really good idea. When I pull the old muffler out to inspect it for holes or leaking crimp and also replace the exhaust gasket I'll try that. I may even try sealing the threads with some extreme heat JB weld that I have.

Good news, sprayed Seafoam Deep Creep on muffler studs, let it sit for 15 - 20 min. and nuts came off without a hitch. Tore the muffler down and discovered frt. & back halves had separated at the crimp on left hand side; recrimped, assembled and installed, now good to go and much quieter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
