Default Noob From Florida!

Just wanted to pop in and introduce myself and my new tractor. The Ebay Bunny delivered it last month so my son and I could get into garden tractor pulling. My brother has a 72 Cub and had been throwing listings over the fence to me for several months.

I took the bait and bid on this 1715 with a 17hp Kohler twin. Seller said that it ran great and needed a battery. Bidding ended at a tick under $140 and we were the happy new owners. Seller said that the engine was worth what we paid for it. After having it home and running it a little bit, I'd say he was probably right.

It took a little bit of work to get it to this point. My son and I installed a new battery, fabbed-up a new brake rod and did a little bit of spit and shine. My son (11-years old), sandblasted both front wheels and we painted them and put new rubber on them. We'll be working on the rears next. I've been thinking of putting a set of GBC Gators on the back. They're ATV tires, and a little larger but should fit fine, so long as they'll fit on the wheel width. They're also 6-ply, so they should be heavy enough for what we would be doing with them.

She runs great and we're looking forward to repainting the fenders/hood/etc a little later on, after we get a few shows/pulls out of the way. I've noticed that the 1715's are a little bit of an orphan as I can't find too many posts about them and haven't been able to find a set of decals for when we do re-paint her. Hopefully one of the meets might turn up something.

I'd also like to find a mower deck so that I could make the tractor more practical, since my current mower isn't as nice, or of the same quality. Not sure if I need to stick with the 36 or 48-inch deck or, if a 50-something might work. Any input is welcome.

Hope you like our new ride and my son and I are looking forward to learning more about it and enjoying the time together.

I friend of mine has a 1730 and he has a 46" deck on his. You got a great deal on it too! I like the looks of the gators too! I'm sure you and your son will love the cub time you'll spend together as much as me and my son enjoy our time on the cubs! Thanks for the awesome pics too!

Been working on the Cub since picking it up a while back. Most of the work was cleaning up rusty parts and doing some sanding and painting.

My son and I sand blasted the wheels and prepped the rest of the tractor for some shiny stuff. We originally purchased the tractor for pulling but found out that these aren't really good for pulling. So, now it mows our lawn. We found a 32 inch deck for it and got everything working.

Main issue with shining her up was trying to find the decals for the hood. It NEEDED painting but, the original ones were in pieces and cracking badly. No body makes them so, I devised a plan. I went to a local model airplane store and purchased adhesive-backed sheets of blue and black. Then, I cut them to size and matched their spacing with a section of original decal. Then I put a yellow strip about the same size (also matching placement with the OEM decal) over the others. The only thing that doesn't look "right" is that I don't have the numbering like the original set. Not too worried about it though.

I also filled in the hood emblem since it came apart while removing it.

I just took a quick picture of it to just kind of show it off and get back into the groove of posting here. Been busy.

Hope you like it!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
