IH tiller help needed
I just traded one of my cubs for a 1A tiller. When you turn the pulley it will spin fairly easy but start to bind up. spin it the other way and it will spin okay until the same spot as the last time, and just get tighter and tighter until you can't spin it at all. Is there a bearing or chain rusted keeping it from turning? Have the same problem with a #1 tiller as well. Any help is appreciated. If need be I'll stick them in the basement and pull the cases open and diagnose them. If possible what year could it be? the tag says 1A U1111.

I wonder if the chain is bounded up. Need lube?

There are a million moving parts on a tiller. Are the tines spinning freely? How rusted up is everything? Tried spraying the tines at the shaft with rust penetrant first? If those are all free look at the pulley. Does it still have the shield, and is it possibly bent rubbing the shield? If those are OK then you may have to look into the chain drive in the gear box.

Haven't tried anything but turning it by hand. Didn't get a belt guard with it. I believe it needs lubed. Didn't have time to mess with it after I got home. Hopefully tomorrow I can get some rust penetrater and spray it up real good to see if it helps.

Could be a bearing, but it wouldn't likely rotate much at all if it was. Likely a chain issue. Plan to open them up.
