Default Kubota Exhaust manifold to head studs

After mowing several hours last weekend with the 1782 the engine suddenly changed sounds.. did a little quick investigation and discovered the exhaust manifold was leaking where it meets the head. two out of the three studs on the top row have broken off. the front one is broken down flush with the head.. the 2nd one back broke with a good bit hanging out..
My question... has anyone here had experience with these.. I am a mechanic by trade so I am very familiar with methods for removing broken bolts.. just never had any direct experience with a Kubota.. wondered how soft or hard the studs were. Or if anybody has a sure fire way to get them out before I start drilling and welding nuts to the remaining stud. They have been there since 1990 so I doubt they will be willing to let go easy!

Thanks for any help or suggestions!!

Just like any other broken exhaust bolt Jay. Nothing special. Nothing fun. Pull them like you would any other. A Kubota is no different than a Jeep.

I just replaced the manifold and gasket along with the studs and bolts on my 1572 a few months ago. I ordered all the parts from Messicks. Part numbers are below. The gasket below is a 1pc gasket, not the 3 separate manifold gaskets that Cub specs for this engine.

I also had broken studs and bolts in the head. I think I one out with just a small left hand drill bit and the others I had to weld a nut on them.

Kubota 01023-50618 (BOLT) Quantity: 3 $0.86 each $2.58
Kubota 01513-50618 (STUD) Quantity: 3 $0.65 each $1.95
Kubota 02056-50060 (NUT) Quantity: 3 $0.28 each $0.84
Kubota 15861-12350 (GASKET ) Quantity: 1 $5.42 each $5.42

Kubota 15861-12313 (MANIFOLD) Quantity: 1 $62.99 each $62.99
Cub Cadet 921-3017 (GASKET-MUFFL) Quantity: 1 $10.64 each $10.64

Guess the weight of that big ole machine gun hanging off the side takes its toll on them after a while. I will have to check mine. Good luck Jay. Guess it wouldn't hurt to put some copper antisieze on them when going back together too.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was hoping ya'll would say "oh they are soft, drill easy and spin right out"! Maybe they won't be too bad. Headed to the Kubota dealer this morning to see if he has any of it in stock.. if not I will order all of the studs and bolts and a new gasket.
I gotta get this thing going... it's my main grass machine and with the rain we have been getting my grass is growing like crazy!
Might have to break out some of the OLD IRON for backup grass killin duty !

Thanks for the awesome list of part numbers!! Saved me the trouble of looking them up! Got a Kubota dealer 4 miles away that stocks a ton of stuff.. hoping they have the parts!

Thanks again for the part numbers!!

Yeah Mike... I've kinda always wondered about all that weight and leverage on 6 little bolts.. and the three on the top do most of the work. I've checked them before to make sure they stayed tight.. kinda weird how they just gave up like that weight heat and vibration I guess they finally fatigued!

Once one went, the rest were going to go from the added stress of the missing one.

Default Kubota Exhaust Success!

Well I am happy to say.. I finally made time to get my main grass killer repaired.. With a little help from Mr Miller and about $17 worth of parts from my friendly local Kubota dealer, I am happy to report it was a pretty easy and headache free repair. One of the broken studs came out with vise grips... the other one required a nut to be welded to it and a bit of heat. I even took a minute and flattened the manifold out with the belt sander. I was worried about the rest of the bolts being fatigued from the heat and vibration so I replaced them all with new genuine Kubota parts.

I sure have missed that big Haban deck over these last few weeks. We are getting plenty of rain and my grass is growing like crazy!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
