Default Early model 1862 with 451 snow blower

Hello my fellow Cadet owners, new member here. As the title States I have an early model 1862 that came with a blower that I purchased last spring. Come snow season (WI) I attempted to blow the snow but to no avail, I wrote it off as the blower being rusted and the snow sticking. Upon further investigation this week I realized the blower is a 451 2.5 gear ratio model and not the needed 450 1.81 gear ratio model. My question to you all here is what can I do to convert the blower and tractor combo to work.

I know the later model 1862 had a 6" pulley, is that something I can change to from the 4.6" pulley without any problems?

Or could just change the two gears in the gearcase on the blower as I haven't been able to locate a whole 450 gear case?

Have any of you used the Xtreme PTO clutch if so would I be able to use the model built for the later 1862 on my early 1862?

Also not trying to break the bank here only paid $500 for the GT two mower decks and the blower 😀.

Thanks for any help you all can give.

Easiest thing is to swap the PTO to a 6". Should be a bolt on replacement as long as everything else is stock. They are the same engine and everything else mounts the same.

Doing this means that the decks that came with it will also need the bigger pulleys unless they also happen to be from newer tractors as well, or else you will spin them too fast.

You can convert the blower to a 450 with different gears, but the gears are NLA and somewhat difficult to come by. Otherwise you need to swap the whole gearbox.

Thank you for the response. I've ordered a later model PTO from Houtz. Will worry about the pulleys on the deck after winter is over here. Glad you brought that to my attention. Again thank you!

Good luck! The 451 does a nice job when it’s set up properly. Power steering is nice with that big honkin blower hanging off the front too.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
