Default Ready to fix a problem I've had for roughly 30 yrs

So after reading this thread about the 1450 running poorly https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ad.php?t=53678
I realized I still have a problem. By looking at the schematic, I still don't know what to do. I have not looked at the tractor with schematic in hand. But, my starter won't disengage unless I release the key. I installed aftermarket lights behind the grill in my late teens and the wires wrapped around the driveshaft pulling the wiring harness along with it. It starts and run great you just have to let it spin and release the key and hopefully it caught. Any ideas?

I’m confused. Are you saying that it starts in the run position or it won’t fire until you release the key from start to run?

If you’re saying it won’t fire until you let it go from the start position then I have a question for you. Has the key switch ever been changed? Lots of people will put a mag style key switch in place of the proper key switch and then this issue occurs because there’s no positive out of that style of switch during start and only happens in run. Test positive 12 volts to positive side of coil during start and make sure it’s there.

I don't understand your problem, it should turn over/start when you turn the key to start position.
After starting/running you allow the key to return to the run position,
that is normal operation, just like a vehicle.

I think he means it is not turning the motor over, just spinnin' keep doing it till it catches.

Sorry, fellas I'm tired...It spins and turns over the motor just fine. It won't fire until you release the key to the run position. I believe its still the original ignition switch. Sorry for the confusion.

I reckon that you need to verify if you are getting voltage to the run circuit when you are in starting mode. Can you check?

What he said. I've seen this on something else before, don't remember what it was. You'd get it spinning over real good then let go of the key and it would crank.

Reviewing the wiring diagram,
it appears you are not maintaining power to the coil in the start position of the ignition switch.
As a check,
you should maintain power at the "I" terminal while the switch is in the start position.
Sounds like a defective ignition switch.

If I correctly understand his last post,
He said it is cranking/turning over, just not getting ignition in the start position, until the key returns to run position.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
