104 PTO operates in reverse order
Getting a 104 buttoned up. Threw a 42” deck under it to try out and to make sure PTO is ok. When the PTO is pushed in the deck engages. When it is let out it dies. What gives? I’m sure I’m gonna have to take pto off just don’t know what’s going on

Maybe the bearing in the motor is seizing up. Do you hear a humming noise when it is running without the pto belt on?

Do you have the PTO that has the brake incorporated? Or is it the regular PTO?
A pic of the fingers in the engaged position might shed some light

IF.....it is the PTO on a 104, then it is the PTO without a brake.

I just have a hunch when you pull that PTO off and examine it, you'll find it beat to hell and wrongly assembled by PO. I just can't imagine this thing working backwards!

Hmmm.....the 104 would not have any safety switch on it besides the brake for startup. Inspect your PTO and thrust button for excessive wear or incorrect assemble, as much as you can visually. Try removing the mule drive belt and unscrewing/disengaging the turnbuckle for the PTO, then try starting it and observe the PTO. Listen for any unique noises or grinding noises. If all seems well, then reassemble, but without the mule drive belt and try engaging/disengaging the PTO a couple of times, again listening for strange noises.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
