Default PTO questions

I know that there's a difference between a narrow frame clutch and one for a wide frame but what is the difference and can they be interchanged?

The difference basically is the narrow frame has one spring and the wide frame had 2 springs and a brake. The newer style came at serial number 482,000.

The basket/pulley is the same.

Not all the wide frames had the brake style PTO. The brake style PTO requires a different center button on the PTO clutch and has a different casting. So it would require some mods to interchange them.

The non-brake PTOs are interchangeable between NF and WF tractors. One spring or two doesn't matter functionally, the double spring just gives you more clutch pressure. The manual even says you can add the second spring to the NF clutches.

You can take a brake style PTO clutch and replace the center button and use it on a non-brake tractor.

You can put a non-brake PTO on a brake equipped tractor by either eliminating the brake pad or by milling three grooves in the PTO casting and changing the center button to accommodate the brake pad engagement.

This is true but you will have to change the pto button arm.
You can't use a NF pto casting without the teats to work on that also.

This only works with the ones that have the teats, the ones without teats you can only use one spring and it is different also as the tips fit in the grooves cast in the pto.

I agree on this information.

This still requires the pto engagement arm to to be changed as it is different. The PTO has to have the teats cast into it also.

Pictures for your pleasure.

The first one shows the NF and WF side by side as they came from the IH
There is also great info that Roland put together.

So I'm asking, because I don't know. I have an electric pto on the front. I have no rear pto on my QL and no experience with a rear pto other than a 8N.

It is a mechanical front PTO. All tractors made before the Quietlines had these instead of electric.

Default PTO Clutch Parts

I need a PTO clutch disk and spring (759-3480). Any advice as to where to get them? I have been buying they on Ebay, but they are a bit spendy? Does anyone have better options? Thanks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
