Default 1650 Battery Drain

New member here! Inherited my father-in-laws 1977 1650. It wasn't running since 2018. Two weeks ago, rebuilt the carb, cleaned the fuel system (added a fuel filter), new plugs, points, condenser, air filter, oil and filter change. New Walmart battery. Got it up and running. Runs great.

When I turn it off, the analog hour meter continues to run. I thought it would stop as I read somewhere that it winds itself like clocks in older cars. Came back 10 days later and new battery was dead.

Recharged the battery and it started just fine. Turn it off and hour meter continues to run. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? Yes - light switch is off.

See if the Hour Meter continues to run with the key in the "off" position.

Might be bad ign switch, or someone has messed with the wiring.

Hello Roland - thanks for the reply. In fact, I found your wiring diagram from 2006 online. Yes - the hour meter runs with the switch in the off position.

1711Cub suggests that the ignition switch may be bad - that is what I am thinking as well. Thanks for your suggestion 1711Cub. I'll check continuity between the A and B terminals with the switch in the OFF position. Hopefully that is it and a new ignition switch should fix the problem.

There is the problem. The hour meter only runs when the ignition switch is in the on position. (A) The hour meter is not wired correctly, (B) there is a short in the wiring, picking up some voltage from another source, powering the hour meter, or (C) the Igniition Switch is bad internally. Time to do some digging and get the DVM out.

If I may add:
the clock style hour meters are electric over mechanical.
Sooo,--- there is a spring that is stretched by a electro magnet, and as such, it will continue to run the second hand approximately 60 seconds,(give/take)
so that needs to be considered when trouble shooting.
Best to use a meter or test light to actually see if power is being applied to the "clock" electrical connections.
If one turns up their hearing aids and puts their Ear up to the hour meter, you can actually hear it ticking till the spring fully retracts, closing the electrical points,--- yes they are old skool with breaker points

I was wondering if the key switch is more than a three position switch (off, on and start)? As if it has off, on, start and a 4th position? If so, you could be mistakenly thinking tractor is switched off but instead you are on the 4th position?

Edit: A wiring diagram I found says otherwise....it is originally a three position switch.
