Got 1864 running
Had some warm weather so I had a chance to work on the non-running 1864. Not done with it yet but did get it running, here is a list of what I did to it;
1-took starter completely apart, cleaned and lube it. 2-replaced broken key switch and broken PTO switch. 3-replaced battery cables. 4-changed engine oil and filter. 5-Drained old gas, filled with new 6-replaced fuel filter and air filter. 7-rebuilt carb (it was so gummed up I had to pry out the needle). 8-changed trans fluid and filter (fluid looked like milk, will probably change again). It seems to run good, power steering works good and lift works. The only thing I noticed is when I move the directional lever too quickly, I hear a slight clunk in the trans axle. When I move it slowly there is no noticeable noise. Should I be concerned about the clunk? Thanks Greg |

Check the bolts that attach the rear end to the frame.( above the axle in back)
and the ones in front of it, they are known for problems. The front ones sometimes break the housing. Extreme makes braces. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
