QA42A Snow Thrower Bearings and Resto help
Hey guys,
I have a QA42 snow thrower that I'm planning to clear my acreage driveway with this winter. It goes on my 2182. We got both from the previous owner, he hadn't used the snow thrower in a while and it was neglected so I'm doing a bit of a restoration on it. I have seen there are a lot of threads on restoration of QA42 and QA36 snow throwers, but I didn't see anything definitive about where people got bearings and if they were able to get something cheaper than the cub bearings. My auger bearings need replacing, and I'm going to check the other bearings as well. My auger bearings are the flange bearings, and the flange itself is the bearing with no seals present. If I can't find anything, the ones from CC specialties that are a sealed bearing that come with the flange pieces look good, just wondering if anyone found any other options for the rotor bearings, needle bearings on the shaft, and bearings and seals for the gearbox. I'm also going to replace the u-joints, if anyone has had any luck getting those somewhere your thoughts would be appreciated. I found a paint colour called Recreational White at my local home improvement store that is close enough for my needs. I'm going to wire brush it all and do a repaint. I'm hoping to be able to find all the parts I need and get it back together before it snows here in Alberta.

The bearings for the auger should be available at any farm store worth their salt.

I have my doubts with my local farm stores.

I did not know you could mount one to a 2182. Did the PO have to fab some brackets to make it work?

Nope. I've seen others online say they've used one with a 2182.

I had a QA42-A on a 1912 (Super). It worked, but not without issues. Two majors are the lift rod, and the exhaust outlet blows on the chute which makes it hot and makes the snow stick. So, this year I've acquired a real nice 125 to run the QA.
A 2182 has the side muffler, so the exhaust thing might not be as much of an issue, but you will still have to deal with the lift rod customization.

A QA42A will fit on a 2182. There is a difference between the two.

It seems we're drifting on the topic. It appears that the parts I'm replacing are the same between the two. I know it fits my tractor, and it has run on it before (I haven't run myself it as the bearings were toast). Compatibility isn't in question, I'm just trying to find the repair parts I need in a timely manner at a hopefully reasonable cost. I did find the rotor bearings locally yesterday, but now I'm struggling to get the driveshaft off of the sprocket shaft so that I can press those needle bearings out and find replacements. I've got most of the inside cleaned up with a wire wheel and will need to do a few weld repairs, but nothing major. I already have new skids, wings, a drift hood, drift cutters, and a wear edge from Xtreme. With new bearings, seals, some weld repairs, paint, and new decals, this thing will hopefully last several more seasons.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
