Default Fixing a cracked block with a clamp?

So I saw this CL ad where a guy is selling a LT1042 with the 19HP Courage engine. But the engine has a crack in it on the right side (when looking from driver position). He has it “repaired” with a clamp around the crack and swears it doesn’t leak oil.

I have no plans of buying this mower, but is this even a thing? Clamping a crack back together and continuing to use it? The guy claims he has fixed another engine same way and it’s been running for over 2 years…

It is called a "jury rig"
It will hold as long as the clamp stays in place.
Might last the life of the rest of the mower, then again, who knows?
I see he has used some goober stuff, prolly an epoxy, to stop the oil seep.
The mower is worth what it would be without a motor, parts in other words.
Don't think I would depend on the "repair" unless it was to finish mowing that day, till a replacement can be acquired.

Yeah no way I’d pay anywhere near the $600 he’s asking for the mower. I don’t trust anyone else’s rigged up repairs, let alone my own lol

A yellow C clamp would have went better with the color scheme.

That's an OK "get it by" repair.
It's all over YouTube.
Along with others.
Not some thing that should be sold as a repair though. IMO
I've bought a lot of those mowers for $50-$200 depending on condition.
That one needs an engine.
$50-$100.
$100 would have to be near perfect in every other way.

The words in the CL ad state:

“The 19 H.P. Kohler Courage engine runs good, but if you google them they are prone to getting a crack right where this one has it. The top 4 or 5 bolts on the case cover tend to back out and then the extra stress on the crankcase will crack it. Those 4 bolts on this one have been replaced AND Lock-Tite put on them. They wont come back out.”

Is that a design flaw with the courage engine, like he says?

They crack because the top cover bolts get loose.
Lots of people like to blame poor design.
But the fact is that engine leaked a lot of oil before that block cracked.
Had the owner bother to look at it? It would have been fixed with a wrench and some lock tite.

I've seen those engines with 1500 or more hours on them.
I think it's really a bad owner/ operator thing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
