1641 Trans and PTO Issues
I had a problem with my carb solenoid and that is fixed. Now I have 2 issues.
When running, my transmission wont shift into forward or reverse. Note that when the engine is shut off it shifts into forward and reverse fine, so I dont think its a linkage issue. Also, now my PTO starts but as soon as I let off the switch it shuts off. I recall something similar happened a year or so ago, seems like I replaced a relay or solenoid on the PTO but I don't remember the details. Before I waste everyones time on these issues. Now.....when I start and let my foot off of the brake pedal the engine dies. Thoughts? |

If the foot brake is pressed, the transmission linkage is pushed to neutral. So, check the linkage for adjustment or binding.
The PTO operation is interlocked with multiple safety switches. Locations - under seat, brake under the tunnel cover and behind the dash on the transmission control lever. Suggest following a wiring diagram and test each switch if properly functional and the wiring connectors are clean and tight to the switches. Also possible is a broken wire to the multiple switches.

Considering, you replaced the Reverse Relay not that long ago, the next culprit I would suggest is the Seat Switch (Black one). That switch has to close (when you sit on the seat), to keep the Relay energized. Check that out with a VOM or DVM. Check & advise.

Engine Dies on Brake Release
Thank you...I am going through wiring diagrams and physically checking the wiring for the PTO issue and will let you know what I find. I did check the linkage and no binding at all. When the engine is off, the shift lever seems to move as it should.
Any thoughts on why the engine dies when I release the brake? |

In checking the switches I now realize that if I am NOT depressing the seat switches and release the brake she keeps running. I am going to check the Grey switch as you mentioned but would really like to understand what I am doing.
I assume I can test the Grey switch by jumping the Black/Purple connection on the wiring connection? Seems logical but I just want to double check to make sure I am not messing something else up in the process. |

Ok cant tell you how much I love electrical issues. I went ahead and jumpered the black/purple and everything seems to be running as it should. Foot off brake engine runs, PTO stays engaged when switched on.....
Problem I have now is that I checked continuity of both of the seat switches and they seem to be fine. I guess they could break down under load but.......What am I missing? |

The Black Switch is Normally Open (NO) and when you sit in the seat, the switch closes.
The Gray Switch is Normally Closed (NC) and when you sit in the seat, the switch opens.

Yes sir and the switches seem to be operating as they should. However, now when I sit on the seat the engine dies. Switches are in the right spot and I have verified the correct wiring on the switches. I think the seat switches are good and am now looking at the Brake Switch, which I assume is the Interlock Switch on the diagram.
