Default 1872/2072 pto

Does anybody know what size is the pulley on a Magnum 20 PTO? Normally the M18 got a 1 1/8" crankshaft but the one I have got a 1" crankshaft with a 6" pulley so I have no clue where this come from yet.

The PTO I got for the M20 fit on his 1 1/4" crankshaft and has a 4.5" pulley but that pulley can move around in the casing!

Is it suppose to do that and do I have the right size pulley?

You realize, that Kohler had different sizes of crankshafts within an Engine Family, for different OEM's to suit their needs. Just because you have a M18 or M20, doesn't mean that all PTO's are going to fit all applications.

The only way to get the correct PTO to what you need, is by getting the PTO specific to the Kohler "Spec Number" and the OEM (ie: Cub Cadet, Toro, MTD, Sears, etc). For example: Cub Cadet M20-49512.

Roland the M20S spec number is 49512 so yes it's a Cub cadet engine with a 1-1/4 crankshaft, Kohler number 52 014 71-S and the PTO part number for this engine is 917-3043 but the pulley size is nowhere to find on CC parts chart.

The M18S I remove from the 1872 is a puzzle! He got the right spec number on his little plate (24506) for a cub cadet engine but instead of having a 1-1/8" crankshaft, Kohler number 52 014 66-S like he should he got a 1" crankshaft so what happen here? First explanation who come to my mind is someone swap that plate on that engine but who knows maybe the keyway was so mess-up they just remove 1/8" from that crankshaft and broach a new keyway. That can explain the smaller crankshaft size and strange PTO with a 6" pulley on it instead of the OEM 913-3044.

All that to say I just need to know what is the size of the pulley on a 1872 and 2072 PTO so I can figure if the PTO I have is salvageable before buying parts to repair it.

Both the 2072 and 1872 had the 4-1/2" PTO from the factory. My guess is someone swapped the M18 into that tractor and they put the wrong PTO on it.

Thank you Sam

Now I can work on the M20 PTO knowing he got the right pulley size and fit on the crankshaft too. The armature moving around is strange, all my other CC PTO are solid nothing move exception of the pulley spinning of course!

What ever happen on that M18 is a mystery! Only the devil know..

Gilles arent the spec numbers on the covers/tins so maybe the engine was swapped back in the day but original tins/covers from the original motor were put back on the swapped in motor? That seems like the most likely scenario to me.

All I know is Kohler have produced some M18S with 1" crankshaft but not for Cub Cadet so this can be a Cub Cadet engine spec number 24506 with a modified crankshaft or like you guess Alvy an engine with spec number from another brand with tins/covers from a Cub Cadet M18S engine.

Like they says "The truth is in the pudding!"

Gilles:

Maybe the M18 had a crankshaft swap out. Someone not knowing the differences in the crankshafts, ordered or bought the first M18 crank they could get their hands on. Who knows, but an interesting mystery.

Roland:
I don't want to open that can of worn but find parts for it is a PITA without the real spec number, I think this engine crankshaft number is 52 014 79-S, so he came from something like a Snapper or a Grasshopper LT. I remove the front oil seal almost with my bare hands, now it's Google time for a new one but wait! The casing is not the same as the one I got on my M20 so what the frack is it?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
