Default 127 no reverse

Well the time has almost come to address and issue. I have been tied up house projects, drive shaft on my X3 bmw, and work so now I need to crack down on my 127. It’s been a great running tractor but little by little the reverse worked less and less and now there is no reverse at all. I thought maybe a valve on top of the rear end but I’m thinking it’s a linkage issue now. On the “driver side” the side with the forward and reverse lever, I can look between the fender and the tire through a whole and a lever moves in there when shifting. I’ll take a photo of it but it doesn’t not look like it is engaging fully in reverse. Also the tractor sputter forward and wines when the tractor gets turned off. Any suggestions are great, any photos or diragrams would be best.

1. When was the rear end oil and filter change?
2. What oil and filter was used in the rear end?

Another area to check is the speed control linkage. It could be out of adjustment. Page 2.43 and 2.44 of a chassis service manual ( https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/c...ervice+Man.pdf ) shows how to adjust the speed control linkage.

Manual was found in OCC tech section.

The oil and filter were replaced last year. Crossed the numbers from the filter that was on it at NAPA.
Photo of where I think the issue is.

my 129 has same issue, only that one has no neutral or reverse, just forward... partly why I'm swapping hydros with a ported one I have here from a 1650... the other reason, is to have hyd lift on the 129.... have not had the tinwork off the 129 yet, if the issue on mine is external to the hydro, I'm hoping to see the "why" when that comes off..... if I see something that looks out of place, I'll report back/might be same cause of your issue.

That would be helpful, thank you

The creeping forward at shut off is known as hydro creep. You probably need an adjustment there. The NO REVERSE, but you have forward motion is likely due to your relief valve being clogged or stuck. I would try those first and see the outcome. The 127 is not a fun tractor to address these relief valve issues because it is a NF, but if you remove the fender pan, set the tractor up on jack stands and then investigate these valves, I think that would be very helpful to resolving your issue.

Thanks for the information, I’ll have to try it.

Default Adjustment

Do the photos show the position of the cam ( trunnion) plate in each position ( i.e. One photo is fully forward position, one is fully reverse direction and one is in neutral.)

If so it appears you are not getting enough movement on the trunnion when going into reverse.

One photo in each position. That’s why I was thinking linkage was my issue. Haven’t had time to take the tractor apart. Been busy with some other projects.

As well as the rod ends in your forward /reverse linkage I would take a real close look at the springs that are in your damper plate. On my 682/782 the reverse over the course of a couple years got to be almost non existent. After taking it apart I found a bad rod end and the springs in the damper plate had almost 3/8th inch end play. The pin that rides in the slot you have pictured on mine was almost worn in half so I filled the worn area with weld and filed it back to the correct size as well. I corrected those issues and wow what a difference. Good luck

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
