I have had trouble breaking PTO belts with bound up spindles in the past.
Figured the PTO belt was just working way to hard spinning the deck.
Hope you get it figured out soon.

Take apart the tensioner on the deck. I bet you'll find your problem. The bolt it pivots on is probably badly worn or partly seized. It's the weakest link.

Get a parts manual and check the deck schematic against your deck and see if anything is different , also the two new pulleys under the PTO are they spinning freely

That is how i have it, the 5.065 receives the PTO belt and the 4.659 drives the blades. Also it takes a lot of effort to tension and lock in place the PTO belt which is back to my original problem.

I have the 2500 series version of yours, which is the 2544(44 inch deck). I can confirm on my deck- the bigger pulley is used on the PTO belt, while the smaller pulley is for the deck belt.

Ozcubowner Thanks for the drawing, everything looks like it matches, also i removed the two pulleys and spun them while holding the bearing they spun freely with no binding replaced on tractor and still free. The belt being so tight going on seems to be the problem but cant find out why. Thanks

I have also had issues with the PTO belt getting smoked, and there have been a few other cases of that back a few years if you do a search. There never was any rhyme or reason as to WHY these would smoke.

All I could do was to check and make sure I had the spindles lubed, the idler lubed, and ensure I had the PTO belt oriented correctly where it wrapped around the front mule pulleys.

I see the cost of these things had really gone up too. Last time I bought a PTO belt(OEM Cub) I was like $38. I thought I just saw prices of up over $50!!!

I have a 2165 with a 46" 3 blade deck and was going through CC $44 belts. (PTO pulley is larger one on top) I found $15 made in the USA belts on E-Bay and am using them now. Actually I have 3 brand new ones in stock. What I did was clean all the junk from the bottom of the deck, did not seem that bad and sharpened the blades. When there is tall damp grass or thick areas I take a lighter cut and drive slower. In other words I do not over load the deck. Have not broke a belt since.

Default Still Breaking Belts

I have taken everyones advice, all pullys free turning and lubed. What i did not notice before was how hot the belt was when it broke, not able to hold on to it.
also all the pullys the PTO belt was using were very hot, the one on the electric clucht, two under engine and top pully on the double on the deck. I disabled the safety seat switch so i could view the belt while engaged. not rubbing any thing but it was vibrating to and from the deck. The belt is still very hard going on and a good amount of force is reqired to engage the tension.
I let everything cool for about 1 hour and started and engaged the deck, after 3 minutes the belt was too hot to hold on to.
I guess its time to bring it to a dealer.
i am using Cub Cadet MTD belts.

i am using Cub Cadet MTD belts.
They warm up from the friction, but yours must be slipping somewhere?
