Default 1811 fast idle adjust

Hello gents, it's been ages since my last post because nothing has been broken on my 1811 or 149 in a while.

I did have a new 1811 starter that was intermittent and I noticed when it was cranking, that sparks were flying off the starter gear. The bolts were tight so I added a ground wire from the chassis to the rear of the starter case. No more sparks and she starts every time now. There must be a faulty ground wire inside the starter.

Anyway, I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know how to adjust the fast idle to 3600RPM. I looked in the owner's manual and service manual but couldn't find it. I have an optical tach, I just need to know what to adjust.

Well, 3600 RPM is WOT.

Looking at your carb, move the throttle. The "arm" actuated by the throttle cable has a screw that it, essentially, hits at idle. That's how you set the idle speed.

This needs to be done when fully warmed up w/ clean air & fuel filters.

Fast idle is controlled by the Governor. In the Kohler M-18 Service Manual, it describes the procedure to do the same, provided you have an accurate Tachometer.

If I may suggest the service manual is free to download if you have not done so.
Edit:
I should also mention that at the end of the throttle cable on the engine, is a bracket that secures the cable sheath.
the cable sheath is adjustable to allow for more pull on the spring that pulls on the governor.
a lot of times one does not have to adjust the Gov. itself, but just increase the pull of the cable on the spring allowing the speed to be set at the 3600 rpm's
( it is easier done than described)

I have downloaded all the manuals, but unfortunately, the images are generally terrible. I know, you get what you pay for.

The manual mentions adjusting the stop bracket but not the cable clamp. I'll adjust them together using my optical tachometer.

I wish I had an old cub guru nearby to hold my hand while we tinker and crack a few beers.

The some of the Manuals are of lesser quality. The Governor procedure is the same on the KT-17. You can use that manual also.

Don't know if this will help or not but at least it will add some visual to
your thread. I believe if you make sure your governor is set right before
you adjust throttle you will be OK. You can then set where the cable
sits in the clamp and then the stop.
I wish I could sit down and have a beer with someone who is interested
in CUBS as well.

Default Catastrophe?

Well Gents, I was adjusting the throttle cable to get my high revs a little higher and suddenly the engine pegged WAY fast. The linkage is still connected as it has been for the last 4 years, but the governor seems to have suddenly failed. I disconnected the throttle and I can adjust the RPMs by hand, but the governor seems to have no effect on the linkage position.

Motor has 2500 hours and has been well maintained. No smoke, and has always run smoothly.

Is there a way to diagnose this? Am I in for a rebuild?

Sounds like the classic and fairly common nylon governor gear failure. You should be able to see it if you remove the oil filler cap and tube assembly, and look in the large threaded hole. If it's gone or teeth stripped, there's your problem. To fix and replace the gear, the engine needs to come all the way apart.

it also might be as simple that the pinch bolt on the governor shaft slipped.
Have you adjusted it lately? maybe while you were trying to adjust the full governed rpm's?
It is worth a check.
