PS fluid leak through column?
Last year the steering column was leaking hydraulic fluid. Then it stopped & went the rest of the season without leaking. Now it is leaking again. SO doing some research as to what needs fixed. Seems there is a seal in the column that needs changed & I don't have to rebuild the whole thing? Yes/no? If just a single seal in the column, what part is it & how do I get to it?

It has been my experience a leaking column needs a kit to rebuilt it.
Once you disturb it, it needs a kit installed, as disturbing the "O" rings in the segment stackup, it will leak even if it previously did not leak. If you have mechanical skills it is do-able but it is not for the average home owner with minimal experience. The kit is in the vicinity of $80 a few years ago, assuredly it is more now. Cub cadet is the most expensive, but all kits are made by Parker, no matter who bags them, be it John Deere, Cub Cadet, Wheel Horse, Cushman, etc. There are multiple write ups on here, you just have to do a search. Someone might post a link for you. Hope this helps. One has to be very careful to re assemble it exactly as it came apart or it will not function!!!!!!!!!

82 Series. These will work with your 1872. I think Oak used these for his 2072 or his 1772.

It was my 1772 that I rebuilt.
To me, getting the column out is the hardest part of the job. I did mine while I was doing a refurb on the tractor so I had the engine pulled and fluid drained from the rear so I just laid the tractor on is side to get to everything out. You will probably need to raise the front of the machine some to be able to get the column out.

OK I know it has been a while, life, work, & other BS has kept me busy. Today I finally got the column/valve out of the 1872, and I will say if it still leaks when I get it back together, i'm selling it.
But got some questions. First off, column shaft has a bend to it, normal, should I be concerned?  2 of the ports has something in them, is that a filter of some kind? if so, replacement available, or what should I use?  Lastly, I had a metal plate made to hold it in place. Should help.

shouldn't be bent, and I am pretty sure there shouldn't be stuff in those ports. they are full flow.
