800 Cub resto project
Hey guys,
I have been wanting to fix up an older garden tractor and after some research I decided that I wanted a Cub Cadet 800. I was able to find one on Facebook Marketplace of all places. It doesn't run and looks like it need a complete overhaul from one end to the other. According to the serial number it was built in mid-1975 and has a Kohler K181QS motor. Is this the correct motor? If any of you have one of these 800's please feel free to share your restoration tips or pictures of your tractor! Thank you! |

Hello and welcome. Nice pickup for your first project.
Yes, the K181QS is correct and if it can be rebuilt parts are readily available. If it needs replaced, sometimes not so easy depending on your area. There would be nothing in particular that would be different about restoring an 800 than any other cub. But the fact that it is of the QuietLine series, your biggest concern will be with the rubber motor mount system (aka iso mounts). When they are shot, a lot of damage gets done because of engine movement. Another area will be your clutch. The gear drive Quietlines use a flex disc as a clutch plate and when the iso mounts go bad and let the engine move around, the flex disc ends up cracking. If it all needs replaced you would have the option of using original type parts ($$$$$) or solid motor mounts and old style clutch parts. You should get famiiair with the Tech Library, your gonna need these.... Chassis Svc. Man. https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/c...ervice+Man.pdf Engins Svc. Thank you both for the info. How expensive are the original Quietline parts such as the iso mounts and the flex disc? Where would a man find them?
This tractor seems to be original, just been used alittle. According to serial number it was made in mid-1975. |

"Doesn't run" could be as easy as a carb replace/rebuild, cleaning points and fuel flushing. I'd start with the easy, as if the engine is free and has compression, it'll likely run. These old things are incredibly reliable machines.

Nice 800 you have there good score for a first cub. I would not be surprised if it just needs a little carb cleaning, and clean up the points a little and give the wiring a quick look over for any major damage. And have fun ( yours looks better than this poor 800 I picked up a few months back.)

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
