You can "teach" yourself some things..... but you really need a teacher for others. Mechanicing is one of those you need to learn with both a teacher and by doing. Replacing parts you assume are bad, isn't mechanicing, it's guessing. Testing until you find the problem and replacing a bad part is the name of the game. So many people just throw parts at things with no real idea whether they are bad. I used to love it when people brought me their cars after they had spend hundreds of dollars on part to save the "cost" of taking it to a mechanic.... only for me to replace some cheap part in only a couple hours for far less than they had spent on their "fixes".

If you want to play mechanic, but have no experience or no teacher available, it's better to ask for help and let us walk you through the repair than it is to spend the money you did, likely on parts that weren't bad.

Good luck in the future.....

Sounds like a bad mag, or a shorted kill wire under the tins to me.

yes, this is so true and hopefully future readers come across this thread to find this exact point. Before you start replacing parts, why not start with buying a multimeter. Buy the tools that allow you diagnose before buying parts that may not be the problem. But also understand, most folks on this forum aren't mechanics and are coming to you, the teachers, the senior moderators, for experience and insight. That's the beauty of the Internet. The trick is coming to you in the beginning before you start throwing money at the problem. Appreciate all the help thus far and will keep you posted when my mag arrives later this week.

Some times you learn the hard way after changing things that are good, consider it an education and that you paid the tuition. Keep us posted on how you make out. Make sure that you set the clearance between the magnet on the flywheel and the magneto properly. I use a business card.

When I do one of them I set the flywheel so that the magnet is just under where the mag goes, hold the biz card over the magnet on the flywheel and let the magnet hold the magneto then put the 2 screws in then remove the card. Easy job.

New mag arrived. Easy installation. Turned the key and HALLE-FRIGGIN-LUJAH the mower started. A month of researching parts, buying parts, waiting for parts, only to find they weren't the problem is finally over. My son and I took victory laps up and down the drive way. Greatly appreciate the help from those on this thread. Learned a lot of to-do and what not to-do for when things go wrong again.

Considering the age of the tractor the parts you replaced were probably due anyway so your not really out much.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
