1330 - determined to get this running myself
I absolutely refuse to haul this thing into a small engine repair shop. I'm not a professional by any means but i have too much time and money in this little tractor to give up now. Plus i'm learning the ins and outs of it.
The engine turns but won't start. Here's what I've done so far. Replaced the carb with a new Walbro Replaced fuel filter (Kohler inline mesh) Flushed gas tank Replaced the spark plug Replaced the starter Replaced the solenoid Had the battery checked - it's good. Can someone with far more experience recommend some tests I can perform to diagnose? I'm through buying/replacing parts that may or may not be the root cause. My last thing i can think of is to replace the fuse. I may have scrambled the two black wires and single red wires when the first time i attempted to start for the season. It ran just OK all last season. Would quit after 30 minutes of run time. Sat through the winter now it just won't turn over. Grass is getting longer by the day and pulling out the push mower just feels wrong. Thanks for the help folks. |

Joe I feel your pain. I'm thinking why did you replace all those parts? Maybe i'm from the old school being a guy that use to remove an engine on a chain hoist in the front yard on an oak tree limb. I have learned ( and it ain't rocket science) if an engine is getting fire "ei" sparkplug is firing and is getting fuel and will turn over, it will at least hit and try to start. These machines have so many safety switches on them it takes an a lot of reading the wiring diagrams to understand what is keeping it from getting fuel and fire to make it run.
I would start with the wiring, fuses, bad contacts at terminal points, switches. Most of the time it is something simple but most of the time simple is hard to figure out.

I've noticed that sometime i'll turn the key and the engine starts to crank then stops, with the key still turned, i hear a clicking/hum coming from the engine. probably from the starter. If i release, then turn the key again the engine will crank fine but just not start. wondering if this is a root cause. I'm sure it's right in front of me. |

I bought my first and only new cub in 1992, and it was a 1330, still have it today, and will start up and be a usable tractor with a battery and fuel.
They are a real simple little tractor to get running, as there isn't much to them that can go wrong. How is your ground? You wrote, "i'll turn the key and the engine starts to crank then stops, with the key still turned, i hear a clicking/hum coming from the engine. probably from the starter. If i release, then turn the key again the engine will crank fine but just not start". Bad battery connections? Poor cables?

If it was running and quitting last year it may need a coil, but don't buy one until your sure it's not getting spark. I had to replace one on a CV14 last summer. I bought a Lisle 20610 Inline Spark Tester from amazon last year when I was trying to figure out why a twin was only running on one cylinder. There may be better ones or better prices but I wish I had bought one of these 10 years ago.

One other thing i'm going to try (after watching hours of youtube videos last night) is changing the oil. I've had a bunch of carb issues (before replacing with a new Walbro) and wondering if during all those issues too much fuel has mixed with the oil throwing off the compression. Going to drain and replace with 10W-30 to rule that out. If that doesn't do it i could look into the coil. |

that's an honest wage right there and I really appreciate you throwing out the offer. I'm actually in Midlothian (just outside Richmond, VA). If you know of any one handy with these things I'd be happy to compensate them for their time.

You say that you cleaned the Mag, did you set the gap on it between the flywheel properly? If you remove the spark plug you should be able to turn the engine over by hand.

Here is a link for the service manual for the engine.
http://resources.kohler.com/power/ko.../tp_2339_d.pdf You should be able to disconnect the white kill wire from the engine and then jump the starter solenoid to crank it to get it to start. This is the wiring diagram for a 1330.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
