Plan is to fix it and sell it. I gave $350 for it with the blower. Don't need it for the snow I can get a walk behind for that. But do need a riding mower for the yard . So you wouldn't spend $50 for the rear ?

Sorry, you must have posted as I was typing. Let me put it this way, I have done a bunch of repowers into older Cubs and my favorite organ donor is the Cub 2160, basically the same tractor as what you have except that it had a 16HP V Twin Vanguard engine. Why is it my favorite? Because the AGS tranny's went out so early that the engines were always low hour units. There is no way to check them. Most of the problems are with the stupid forward reverse wet clutch pack design. You'll find that the clutch will slip. Only way to test is in a running machine. If it slips going up hill in high gear it's toast. If they are working correctly you can stop on a steep hill and take off in high gear and it won't slip, it should lug the engine down just like if you were in a car with a manual and were trying to start out in high gear.

If you insist on fixing your tractor, you would probably be better off rebuilding the tranny that you have.

Again sorry to give you the bad news but it is what it is.

Man you and I are on a roll when it comes to posting as the other is typing.

I'm glad to hear that you only paid $350 for it. No I wouldn't spend $50 for the rear for it. I would disassemble it and sell the engine, the PTO, the mower deck, the snow blower, wheels, hood, and every little part to recoup what you paid. Then I would look for something better suited for your needs.

Please take the time to ask for opinions here for a suitable replacement. If you take the time you'll find that the real Cub Cadets are pretty much all pre 1996 vintage. Don't let the age scare you. I have one that is a 1962 and it runs as good as a new one.

Again we are here to help.

Is the engine worth keeping to swap into another hydro mower? Don't have a lot of money to spend right now. As I just purchased a home so money is kinda tight right now .

Let me dig into this one a little and see what I can come up with. I get it that the $$$ is tight. The one thing that is strange is that most of those crap the clutch paks but yours won't go into gear. The clutch pak and the trans are 2 different sections in the tranny. Just wondering if you don't have a linkage problem? I'll get back to you tomorrow after I do a little research. I'm old and it's past my bed time LOL.

From what I see it also has some sort of "interlock" that is tied into the shifter. Not sure how the thing works.

Here is a link to get the service manual.
http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Cub-...epair-Manuals/

Then click on this to download the manual.
Cub-Cadet-2000-Series-Service-Repair-Manual.pdf

It's a 27MB file so it's too large for me to send, gotta love Century Stink.

Pic is from the Cub parts site.

I'd go lightly in the beginning as far as tearing into it, might be something simple on the outside, do a little 'net research if you haven't already.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
