Default LTX1040 with Blown Courage

I picked up an LTX1040 this morning with the back blown out of the block. I have a Briggs 12 hp flathead and a Kohler 15 hp Command that I can try to repower it with. It has a manual PTO so I don't have to worry about the stator being big enough, just need enough to charge the battery. If anyone else has replaced the Courage in a Cub LT I would be interested in comments or pictures. I think the muffler may be the biggest problem but I don't really know.

I'd say no but there's to much evidence to the contrary. My sons neighbor blew this thing up last year so I loaned him an old AYP LT to finish up the year and find another engine. My son called yesterday and told me the guy had bought a Zero turn and to come get this one and the one I loaned him.

Well I guess the place to start would be to download the dimensional drawings from Kohler and see if the Command will play.

Would it be wiser to parts it and use the $$ for a more worth while project?

I took the Courage out of the Cub today and the Command out of an old Craftsman. Looks like the balancer tried to escape and would have got away except for one arm that was holding it.
George, I already have better projects. Can't explain why I'm fooling with this.

Just being a goof, duct tape and JB weld and you should be god to go. or as others say you need Courage to own a Courage.

I found part of what I think was the governor assembly in the pieces, if that came apart it may have over reved. I set the Command on the frame with the craftsman muffler on it thinking it might work, when it hits the frame the engine need to go back about another 1 1/2 inches. Also I think the oil filter housing may hit the dash tower support (behind the wire loom) before it gets back far enough. May have to try the flathead. I don't know about courage but I felt sorry for the kid when this thing blew up. My son called me to come over and see if I could fix it. I told them all I could do was loan him a mower.

I saw some pictures on the net this morning of Commands in this tractor but they must have cut the tower support a little. Another option is a 14 hp Kawasaki I saved out of an old green tractor but again the muffler will not work. I took the courage apart this morning just because I had never seen the inside of one. I didn't intend for this to become the exploded engine thread but if someone needs any of these engine parts and is close to 30738 let me know before they hit the dumpster in a few days. I'm going to keep the Voltage regulator, muffler and the carb. I can't see any damage to the piston so I would think the rod, piston, head and valve train are ok.

I needed to take the Kohler apart to clean it up anyway so I took it apart to be able to handle it better. I found out the oil filter housing was hitting the plastic skirt before the tower. I trimmed a 1/2 notch in it and got all the mounting bolts started. The oil filter housing is just barely missing the metal tower support but it is clearing. Everything seems to be lined up same as the Courage. Now I need to spray the engine down with some cleaner and take it to the car wash. All the sheet metal on the engine needs to be repainted before I put it back together. See Sam this is fun, like 50 shades of IH yellow.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
