I called a local Cc dealer and he asked about the transmission belt. I checked the main belt that I can see under the seat on the pulleys to the blades.. And it was on. I have to find that transmission belt tonight and check it out.
It might explain the whirring sounds I heard that were unusual after I turned it off.
Any hints on locating this transmission belt?

Try this link from Cub cadet on how to replace a belt.

Thanks. I've seen that belt and it's on.
He said there was a separate transmission belt on these models?

OOP's sorry that is the deck belt. The drive belt is up above the mower drive belt. Never did one but I've heard they are a PITA to change. It runs from the engine to the trans.

Ok.. Well I am going to hunt that one down tonight. I'd be a lot happier just to know it's a belt verses a bad transmission. I'd certainly never tackle that. Lol. It'll go to a repair shop either way.

Excellent.. Thanks.
Hopefully I can just take a light and look up under it and see if it's off.
But... If the belt is off or broken, wouldn't it still roll?
This thing won't roll... It's like the brakes are stuck.

It looks like the belt broke and took the fan blade off with it. Most likely something got into the belt and when it went around the pulley it broke the fan and jumped the pulley. I didn't see the belt...is it intact? At any rate you will need a new fan blade back on the rear pulley. The belt isn't the hardest thing to change and if you are mechanically inclined you can do it yourself. But expect to pay $200 if you have a dealer fix it....including parts. There are several videos showing you how to do it online, the belt, that is. The fan should be rather straightforward. But again it's up to your ability. If you wind up having it fixed have them go over everything while it's there. My Lt is 9 years old this year and I have changed the drive belt once, and the deck blade 2 or 3 times.

Yea, I think I see the belt in the front pulley.
wow....really..now how often would that happen to a guy??
But still. why won't it roll freely? I can turn the fan fitting (where it used to go) and it spins freely. What does this have to do with it not rolling...at all?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
