When I think of older anything it makes me think about parts and design requirements. Most seem to have these new light duty tractor's and use them for heavy duty work not just cutting the grass and then say they are junk. When JD puts something in a expensive tractor and its fine and another brand does its not good, this seems like brand bias. Just an observation.

I think that the person that said the people with bad or abused mowers on another site yell the loudest. That makes me think they might not be made as good as they once when properly maintained you will get many years of service out of most.

Ever heard the expression "some people could tear up and anvil with a tack hammer"? It is very true. My dad spent 23 years at an IH dealership before he retired. The dealer also carried a few different lines of air cooled engines as well as Echo products. It didn't matter if you are talking about combines, small bulldozers, Cadets, or weedeaters, there are idiots that can demolish anything. Of course every manufacturer will make a lemon occasionally. I say pick the machine you like and roll the dice and buy it. One of the nicest cheap mowers my dad keeps serviced is a Craftsman. It is well designed, well powered and mows beautiful. There were a couple corners cut on it, but I have seen Cadet and Troy-bilt approach mower design just as cheaply. I haven't been around too many late model Deeres, but would imagine they do the same. Bottom line, you won't buy a Kenworth for the price of a stripped down Toyota. If all you need to do is ride to and from work, get the Toyota and think of the money you will still have in the bank!

That makes a lot of sense, I generally take care of what I have to make it last awhile.

Oh ya... the only issue has been a thorn in the front tire... The machine has actually been used by my parents for the past couple of years regularly. I own a landscape company so I've got quite a few to choose from. However, regular maintenance is a must.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
