Cub Cadet model 2166 starting problems
Okay fellas here it is.
I just recently bought a Cub model #2166 16 hp Kohler engine, with 435 hours on it. It has been hard to start from the time I received it. When it starts it will run good no misfiring or backfiring plenty of power however this Saturday, mowing with it, it stopped like It was out of gas about 45 min into mowing. So I checked gas it was a little low, but not empty. So I went and got some gas filled it up and after choking for a long while it finally started and I finished my mowing job, however it is still doing it with a full tank of gas. This is what I have done. Sea foamed it, rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, new air filter, new fuel filter, oil level is good, gas is new, and new spark plug. When it is hard to start I can pull the plug, put gas in the hole and it will fire right away. While the plug was out I looked to see if it was getting a good spark and it was. I don't think I have missed anything. Thanks for all your help in advance.. I love this mower and am willing to do almost anything to get it right.. Thanks again |

Does it have a fuel shut off solonoid. Sounds like that is where the problem might be.

I agree... is there anything in between the carb and the plug that could be faulty?

Fuel shut off should be mounted right on the float bowl of the carb. Either the plunger is sticky or bad electrical connection.

Guys;
There is a solenoid on the bottom of the bowl. I put 12 volts to it and heard and felt it close, seems like its working well.... My Cubby today is firing up so hopefully I have done something right, we will see. I'll fire it up a few more times today to see if I have any problems. |

I've seen a lot of fuel line going bad and collapsing. The ethanol eats the inside of the hose. Not a big deal to replace the complete fuel line on a 2000 series. Also make sure your gas cap vent is not plugged.

Could some gunk be lodged in one of the fuel lines? Maybe pre or post filter?
My 2166 did this some time ago and you could see the filter fill with fuel, and the engine would start for a few seconds and the filter level would drop and eventually cut supply to the engine. After the engine died the filter would again slowly fill with fuel. Something was in the line before the filter. We blew it out with an air blower and it started working fine again. |

Nice S-man,,, Didn't think about the lines. Now that you say something about it there is very little gas in the filter while running and after it sits it does fill with more gas. Hmm.... Maybe your on to something I will definitely either replace the line or try blowing it out as there was another post about the lines collapsing I think it would probably be best to just replace the line since its probably not that expensive.
Thanks for your input |

Sam Mac, Thanks for your input as well. The gas cap is not blocked that was one of the first things I checked. I do like the fuel line being presented as a problem this is definitely A good idea. I will be replacing it as soon as I can get to the parts store which should be tomorrow as they are not open today. very good idea however I hope this is it. I'm running out of things to check.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
