Default GTX2100 High reving

HI All,

Im new to the forum, and bought a CC GTX2100 last year:
Specs include; power steer, elec fab deck, kohler ch680-3056 Engine

I got it cheap as it had issues that I have been working through and got through last winters mowing (here in in Australia - too dry in summer for mowing ;-)

Any way I have dragged it out to use again and its revving its nuts off with no throttle - suspect that its the governor and will try adjusting.

Question is if the governor gear (plastic?) has given up the ghost can you bypass the governor system instead of stripping motor to put new gear in??

Welcome to OCC
It is NEVER recommended to bypass or render inoperative, a governor system.
Bad things happen internally, sooner than later.
Internal parts tend to divorce each other and rapidly exit to the "outback"
Best to investigate the problem, trying the easy stuff like adjustments first.

If the gear took a dump it's not a big deal to pull the front off the engine and replace it. You can download the service manual from the Kohler engine site.

Thanks All,

Have it in the shed and will look at replacing gov gear that seems to have given up the ghost - tried adjusting etc but still no control - managed to get low idle manually with gov lever but no throttle lever control.

Does engine have to come out or can do it situ???

I can't say for sure if you can do it without removing the engine. If it was me I would pull the engine and also clean the buildup of crud in the cooling fins. Pics are from a 2550 that was running so hot it melted the hood.

Good pics on the melted parts - thats serious!!

Gday OZcubowner!! - ill try that number also as its giving me grief already.

Yep im gonna pull engine out as it was running V hot also, am going through all wiring - connectors are in need of attention plus many other things, the guy who had it before me said the power steering stopped working - not connected thats why.

Anyway - noob question - need to get the PTO clutch and pulley assembly off the crank - is there another way of locking the engine other than flywheel locking tool???
Currently just spins the driveshaft etc etc and not an easy way to lock that with the small 4 bolts

I use an impact wrench to remove the bolt that holds the PTO on the end of the crank.

Impact wrench on windy gun sorted it thanks

Finally got round to removing engine at the weekend, removed front crankcase and the governor shaft was sticking a little.

I have managed to free it all up and the governor seems to be doing what it should do plus the gear is in good order and not worn so ill put back together later in week and try it.

Hopefully it will be an easy fix

Plus there was a small garden bed behind debris cover so good opportunity to clean the whole area
