Unhappy 1641 won't go-go!

My 1641 suddenly won't go fast in forward and will barely move in reverse. This rig has always been a climber, I have a very hilly 6 acres that it mows weekly, and several trails through our woods as well. Now, she won't climb the grades.

It's not an engine issue, there is no strain on the engine when climbing, it maintains just as it always has. I've checked the linkages and I've checked the fluids.

Could it be a plugged up Hydro filter? I put a new OEM filter on it last September.

Any suggestions appreciated!

might be time to change the fluid and filter again. is the brake pedal coming all the way up? sometimes that will hang and make it not move much. what about your cv joints, do you grease them now and then? sometimes the splines can strip where the shaft goes in also, but that would not move at all then.

Yep, she's greased. I just went to my local CC dealer and bought a new filter and hydro fluid, so we'll see what that does.

See part #3. Rivets work loose and limit hydro travel. Eventually break. Later handles were welded.

Oops. I didn’t read the OP carefully enough. I had that happen once where the rivets went loose.

Default Solved!

Replaced the hydro filter and fluid, she's ready for the race track. I searched the old for any nefarious substances, but didn't see or feel anything, so should be good to go.

Thanks for the replys!

good deal. I almost completely lost reverse in my 1782 yesterday, then realized the tunnel cover had come loose, the back had moved over and was keeping it from going in reverse! gotta love the easy fixes.

Unhappy Well, that didn't last long.

So, after changing the filter and hydro fluid, the 1641 worked great for about 3 hours. Now, she's back to sluggish. Something is clogging the filter, I suppose.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
