Success! I installed the new crankcase breather assembly and it’s quiet as a mouse. Well as quiet as a mouse can be around a running KT17 series II. I don’t understand why the old one made that noise. It looks physically the same as the new one except used.

I’ll take the win though.

Thinking it was leaking just enough to produce the whistling noise you heard.
You did mention it was a reed type.
prolly if installed on a different engine, it might not whistle at all.
And if it did, it might be a different tune Ha,LOL!

I could put it on the old engine and it’ll be quiet.

This engine is a little “tickey” on the one side. I can hear that now that it’s not whistling. It sounds like valves. Is that how they sound? My magnum doesn’t sound like that, it just growls. I changed the oil and it was rather thin looking and had a metallic sheen in the bowl. That concerns me a little. But no smoke from the engine, there’s a little positive pressure from the vent (rubber glove) but it takes a while to fill the glove. There’s no oil in the air breather. So hopefully it’s ok. I’ll run it and see what happens. I probably can’t damage it any worse than the last engine.

This thing will not start now. I got spark and gas. When I pull the plugs to check them there’s a little smoke that comes out of the spark plug hole. When I turn it over with the plug out it puffs the smoke out and looks like black soot. Is that flooding? Or low compression. Or both? Maybe timing? I have the points gapped at .019. It took a lot of cranking to get it started before. After it has sat a little while though it is doing this now.

This thread has been dormant for a while, but I figured out the issue with the hard starts. It had a bad coil. It's weird because I ohmed it out and it looked ok, but I noticed it looked like the center was moving out of the case, because there was a space in the groove between the top and the side. I'm not sure what happened to it, maybe it overheated and swelled and pushed out? I had a spare here so I put it on to try it and the engine fired right up and purred. So, now it's a good runner again.
