All the ones you see are built as belt driven units. You can still buy them new. Northern Tool sells them.
Yes, if you can machine, a alternator head can be converted. It's possible that the company who made the alternator may even have a drive end cap to convert it.

WOW.. Wipes my brow! That was so freakin difficult.. think it took me longer to get the tools out the box.. 45 min.. actually more like 20 once I got it out and up where I could work on it

Oh look.. Little feet to help in making the support.. This is really a lot easier than people might try to make you think it is..

Default Jon the motivational speaker?? Jon's got me workin today!!

I decided to use my combination compound head on the lathe. The one with the taper attachment was being used. A little more work but same result. 5 degree taper, .625 x 1" 1.75" long.. Finish off with a 5/16 24 tap and shes all set.

The ones from older air brake trucks are great. Build in pressure relief makes it easy to adapt. Just need a pulley air tank and a velvac style D2 regulator.
