Smile A Hopeful Score

Well, if all goes as planned, much later today I'm in hopes to have found a Kohler M18! Guy says it ran when parked, and is being delivered! This will go good next to my KT17, lol!

Good luck. I have one in my red 582 that came out of a Sears with a 1" shaft that the Briggs pto bolted right to. Mike

Thanks,...…….but...…

Turns out to be a Kohler 17 Series Two, and not the m18. Oh well. I still like the engine! Its out of a Ford LGT 17, I'm figuring. The later Ford garden tractors came with the M 18's.

Ill post more tomorrow!

Not a lot of difference in the series 2 vs the magnums.
The series 1's is where the low pressure splash connecting rod oiling, caused early demise.
Magnums have a magneto ign. instead of points/coil on the series 2, and other small changes internally were made.
They were basically a slight upgrade in a good 2nd design before the production of the opposed flathead twin ended.
Still my favorite opposed twin.

IMHO, I would agree also.

That's good information and opinion, thanks! So, because of the two cylinders, the Series 1 must have been more fragile as opposed to the single cylinder Iron Line Kohler's ?

Tractor Data lists the Kohler 17 twin at 691 cc, and where as the Kohler Mag 18 is also listed as a 691 cc engine.

Here are a few pictures. I got the engine for $80. The guy I work with sold it to me, and said it ran fine until the mower deck was shot, and the driveline was gone. He kept the 17 hp and scrapped the rest of the tractor. Says this engine is out of a Ford garden tractor that had a 60" mower, but could not recall what model. I looked at Tractor Data, and seem to believe this engine could be from a 1983 -1986 Ford LGT-17. I also got the dash with all instruments and controls, along with the engine wire harness.

Upon first glance, it appears to me that the engine base ( engine mount locations ) looks identical to the other Series Two I have - said to be from a IH 782 ( in favor of a Mag 18 ) . However, the flywheel appears different when looking at where the Cub drive hub would mount. A side from the actual flywheel plastic screen, my best guess is that all engine tin and components are not missing.

Thank you gentlemen for your response, and looking!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
