Default Cold stating issue

Had some issues with cold weather starting of my 1450 and thought I would offer my findings to the group.

Checked valve clearance, inlet was OK, exhaust was found at 0.023” and adjusted to 0.018”. One issue I found was that the breather filter mesh had disintegrated and the fibers were plugging up the drain hole in the breather. My fault as I had not checked the valve clearances in the last 30 years.

Cleaned breaker points and set timing with timing light.
Replaced spark plug with Champion H10C and adjusted gap to 0.030” (IH manual specifies 0.035”, Kohler manual specifies 0.025” so I compromised).
Removed carburetor and cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner. Found that float height was incorrect and adjusted to 11/64. Needles looked good as did the float valve so they were not replaced.

Starting was better but I had to use full choke and bump the speed lever up a bit to get a quick start when temperatures were below 0 degrees. With the engine warm the low idle speed was about 1250 rpm which is less than the Cub Cadet recommended speed of 1800 rpm. The Kohler manual recommended a low idle speed of 1200 rpm to 1700 rpm depending on parasitic loads (hydrostatic transmission). I then bumped the low idle speed up to 1450 (when engine was warm) as a test. With the low idle speed at 1450 rpm I can start the tractor with full choke and keep the throttle lever at idle and the start is within 1 or 2 revolutions. I had the acid test several weeks ago when the temperature was at 20 degrees below zero and the engine started immediately. The idle speed jet is set at 2-3/4 turns from closed and the high speed jet is set 3 turns from closed.

That’s my experience and I hope it helps anybody with cold weather starting issues.

That’s a great write-up. Very informative.

Suggest you reread your Kohler Manual on spark plug gap.
Battery ignition such as your 1450 has is .035
Magneto ignition that is in a pull start IH Cub Cadet is .025.

Info was found page 1.6 of a Kohler Service manual.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
