I have an old starter/generator(actually the original one for my tractor), I want to use as a back up.

Two questions:

1) What can you use to clean the grime and grit out of the starter?? Is Brake clean OK??

2)The back plate is damage where the bushing goes. It can be reused, but open to the elements. Has anyone ever converted that end to a sealed bearing, and how??

Use electrical contact cleaner. Brake cleaner is too strong.

I used kerosine over the years, and a final flush with Gas blown out with compressed air.
You just want to wash the field housing not soak it,
but just use your head when using gasoline as it is highly flamable.
Ya don't want to be using it in a confined shed/ garage with a space heater glowing. I'm thinking you can find a good used end cap to replace your damaged one.
I'm assuming the end is knocked out? if not, the bushing is replaceable.
I did see one used many years with a gob of sealant covering the missing end,and I ain't saying who applied it, Ha,LOL!

In the old days they were much more plentyful.

I use a lot of Coleman Lighter Fluid. It cleans good, evaporates fast, leaves no residue, and not that harsh as some cleaners.

The local hardware store sells it by the gallon.

I probably have a spare end cap laying around. Send me a picture of it and I'll dig thru my extra parts.
Since we're both in Ontario it shouldn't be too expensive to mail to you unless you come to the Ottawa area. You're somewhere around Belleville aren't you?

You assume correctly. If I can't get a decent replacemnt I will put ne bushing in , and apply the RTV.

Starting fluid also makes a great cleaner for that stuff. Easier to control than gas. The best backing for the gen is the one that has the bearing. Just an idea.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
