Daihatsu Briggs & Stratton (DBS) – In an effort to stave off Japanese competition during the 1980s, Briggs & Stratton entered a 50/50 joint venture with the Daihatsu Motor Company in Japan. Located in Shiga Prefecture (50 miles (80 km) from Osaka, Japan), construction on the then-57,000-square-foot (5,300 m2) plant began in December 1986 and was completed in April 1987. This joint venture was notable for the manufacture of vertical and horizontal crankshaft engines from 12.5 to 22 hp (16 kW) under the Vanguard brand. Today the plant employs roughly 100 people on two shifts and manufactures Vanguard V-twin engines ranging from 14 to 36 hp (27 kW).[7]
The Van Guard engine is a joint venture between Briggs & Stratton and Daihatsu. This was a popular thing companies did back in the 80's. The Van Guard is a Briggs and Stratton engine in my book. The above quote proves it.

Well, it's half Zeke and half 'Melican according to that article. Zeke design but 50-50 deal.

Who cares. Good engine.

So.......
Is the 60 Series Detroit a Detroit or a John Deere? Or is the Deere Powertech a Detroit? Both engines are almost identical and came from a joint venture between Detroit and John Deere......

Being that the Vanguards seem to hold up better than any B&S motor, I'm going to say they are more Daihatsu than B&S.

I don't know and honestly don't care who designed them, they work and from what I've seen are about as idiot proof as can be. So far I have yet to see one that won't run no matter how stupid the owner is.

Now as far as an un-governed puller engine goes your on your own. Just my 2 cents but I'd have a serious blow shield around the flywheel if it was my feet in the explosion area if it was me.

There are several different tractors that had a Detroit in them. If my memory is working right the John Deere that had the Detroit in it had a the words Detroit Diesel cast into it. My Van Guard engine doesn't have the word Daihatsu on it. I have 2 pre Briggs and Stratton Van Guard Engines that are doing the job ask some 20 to 30 years after they were put into service.

Good maintenance will make any engine last longer.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
