A Cotton Pickin Day

The field next to me got picked today and this is the first time I got to see it first hand. Usually I am not here. Pics to follow. Still pretty cool even thought it had green paint. Pretty impressive machine.

I also got to ride in it. I learned quite a bit about raising cotton. One thing that was pretty neat that it drives itself after it gets lined up on the rows.

Those are HIGH DOLLAR machines! Not only do they pick the cotton but they also bail it. It is a very nice unit... but I don't know farmers afford them! Our farm has been picked with one of those for the last two years.. The owner of the machine said his machine used was $450K! A new one is approaching $750K!

The neat thing about cotton is that it is not an annual, like corn,,
if you could let it grow,, you could have a 50 foot high cotton tree,,,

Then,, you would have to buy a LOT of ladders to harvest it,,,

It will only grow to about 6'......

About 45 years ago, I saw cotton being picked in Missouri,
I was just far enough south to be in cotton country.
It was an eye opener, as us Yankees can't grow it.
Back then it was mostly green equipment.
I can't imaging picking it by hand like they did in my parents day.

Guy in Leesburg down here with the IH museum has one of these. It’s awesome that it runs the opposite way and to see one in person they are quite tall

He told me a new one was 820k. They bought this one when it was two years old. He said they take very good care of it. They grow a lot of cotton. He said they could not break even on corn. His wife's family owns the cotton gin here in my community so they are really big in the cotton industry here.

Found a article on them online. Interesting read. Eric, the owner of the machine is the one I rode with.
