i measured the spare belt i have MTD 954 3075 3 times and each time i came up with 77 7/16" aprox 77.44 if taking the outside measurment is correct that is over a inch smaller than the dimensions you gave me. that would make the differance.

Thanks for the video, i tried all the methods except the string and came up with 77 5/16 to 77 7/16 multiply times.
When my CC dealer and i measured the belt we had a couple of years ago i remember it matched the info he had but i don't know what that was and that belt was extreamly tight also.
Should i contact MTD and give them all the info i have and see what they come up with.

Again, here is the spec on the belt.

"B Section V-Belts are measured on the inside diameter."

B75 - B-Section V-Belt (5L780) 5/8 X 78
B76 - B-Section V-Belt (5L790) 5/8 X 79

At this point you have 2 options.
#1:Continue using the short belts.
#2: Get a belt 1" longer.
and it will go on easier, and problem solved.
You will keep your shorter belt for an emergency spare.
Using too short of a belt causes excessive wear on all drive components,
including but not limited to, belts, pulleys, bearings, idlers, etc.
and causes you aggravation with removal/install.

i really don't know where to go from here except to get a longer belt, i am confused and really appriciate all the help and input.
No matter how i measure the belts i have (954-3075) they measure aprox. 77.4" both ID & OD which makes no sence to me i would think the OD should be larger than the ID. But the conclusion i have come to is the belt appears to be aprox. 1" smaller than it should be at 78.6".
With the information provided on this forum i am going to seek a resolve (belt length) from MTD.
Thank you so very much for your help

I highly doubt you will get anything from MTD, but I wish you luck.

Consider this....if you take a razor knife and cut that belt perfectly across perpendicular to it's length, and stretch it out on its side on a flat surface perfectly straight, and measure the inside and then the outside, do you realy think the measurements would be different???

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
